We all want to do the best for our little ones - that's why we have that urge to wrap them up in cotton wool to keep them safe.

But it turns out that snuggling them up in certain cosy blankets might be doing them more harm than good.

Some midwives have now warned that wrapping our babies in polar fleece, while good-intentioned, could have dangerous consequences.

The key issue is that the synthetic fibers of such blankets are woven very tightly and don't allow the fabric to breathe.

Midwives in New Zealand say that parents don't realise that blankets like these can cause your baby to overheat.

When a baby is wrapped in a polar fleece blanket, air is unable to circulate around the body. The baby then becomes too hot and sweaty.  Because it can't evaporate, that sweat stays on their little body, eventually causing the baby to become too cold.

The midwives say that being either too hot or too cold can contribute to sudden, unexpected death in infancy.

Obviously, our lovely Irish weather doesn't necessarily mean this is as big an issue as it might be in very hot climates but it is important, as parents, to be aware of these factors so we can make educated choices for the safety of our little ones.

I didn't know this while my children were little - now I wish that I had.
