In honour of National Breastfeeeding Week, Cuidiú, the National Parenthood Support Charity, were invited to a Reception and Latching-On Morning in Áras an Uachtaráin last Monday.

The event, which was attended by over 100 breastfeeding mothers, children and their supporters, acted as a platform from which Sabina Higgins - Ireland's 'first lady' - could share her experience of breastfeeding.

Sabina's heartfelt address was warmly received, with guests then being treated to a surprise appearance by President Higgins who spoke eloquently of his wife's journey through motherhood.

Honouring Sabina, Cuidiú presented the mother-of-four, who married President Higgins in 1974, with an honourary lifetime Membership of the Cuidiú and thanked her for the support she has shown the charity.

Cuidiú, which works on a voluntary basis, aims to provide breastfeeding support for families throughout Ireland and provides counselling to mothers as they embark on their exciting new journey.

By providing support and education to new parents, Cuidiú aims to empower families in Ireland and assist them in making informed choices and positive progress as a family unit.

The prestigious event was also attended by La Leche League of Ireland, the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland and Friends of Breastfeeding.
