Mental health issues have been highlighted in the media during recent times, but there really is still so much to do in regards to supporting those suffering from the illness.
Bath and North East Somerset Council are making a big effort to champion early intervention and have created a new scheme called Place2Be to provide support for children in crisis.
Counselling and one-to-one help from school staff is to be offered to students in six Bath primary schools, following recognition that children as young as four can experience issues that negatively affect their mental health.
Duchess of Cambridge Kate Middleton is a patron for Place2Be and has previously spoken about the importance of early intervention when it comes to young people’s mental health.
A child’s mental health can be affected by a number of things, such as divorce, bullying or a death in the family, and having support available to them at a time when they feel incredibly alone and vulnerable can have an invaluable effect.
We definitely need to follow the example of Bath and North East Somerset Council and have more services like this rolled out in schools around Ireland, the UK and the rest of the world.
