Proposed legislation says lesbian couples will be able to register as babys parents

Under proposed legislation, lesbian couples will be able to register as parents of a baby conceived with the help of a sperm donor.

The law currently says that birth certs only allow for the mother who gave birth to the child to be recorded.

However, with these changes, both women will be able to be recorded as the child's parents.

Also, people can re-register their child's details once the legislation is passed.

Minister for Social Protection Regina Doherty said she was "delighted to be able to move the matter forward quickly.''

Signed off by Cabinet yesterday, the bill will be brought to the Dáil in the coming weeks.

The same rights will not be extended to men in same-sex relationships who have children because that crosses over with separate surrogacy laws under the auspice of the Department of Health.
