While birth has traditionally been a very private affair, more and more mums have been sharing their stories and candid images with the world.

This week, one mum who decided to share a raw insight into her own birthing experience has become a viral sensation.

Photographer Helen Allen was only too happy when the unnamed mother contacted her with an idea for a photo shoot that would capture the reality of her emergency Caesarean-section.

After capturing the incredible image, Helen shared it on her professional Facebook page and was amazed to see it going viral.

Explaining the inspiration behind the image, she said: “I had photographed her maternity session a few weeks ago and we were chatting about C-sections and how we are both terrified of the prospect of them.”

While the mum had anticipated a vaginal birth, due to complications she ended up having an emergency C-section – and she wanted to capture the result of facing one of her greatest fears.

“We briefly discussed options such as should we put some fabric over Mum and conceal her or just go with natural. She opted for nude and natural. She wanted something raw and out there. Basically, Mum wanted something to show that her biggest fear was what in the end saved both of them," Helen added.

Incredibly, since publishing the photo, Helen has received abuse from people, while others have been petitioning for the photo to be removed. What are your thoughts?
