An Uber driver got more than what he bargained for when he picked up a mum going to hospital to have her baby, and ended up helping to deliver the little one.

Last Friday night, Erica Davidovich, from Los Angeles, realised she was going into labour. She and husband Niv booked an Uber to hospital. As the couple are Jewish and were observing the Jewish Sabbath, they decided not to drive.

Raymond Telles had picked the couple up, but they had only gone a mile-and-a-half before Erica began screaming “Call 911!”

“I thought, eh, she’s probably just having really bad contractions, she’s not having the baby right now,” Niv told PEOPLE. “Then she said she thinks the head’s coming out, I said, eh. Then I looked down and she was right—the baby’s head was coming out.”

Raymond pulled the car over by a grocery shop and called 911 for help. He stayed on the phone while Erica gave birth in the back of his car.

“I was scared, but at the same time, instinct takes over,” dad Niv said. “You get down to business, and you got to do what you got to do to make sure it all happens.”

Erica gave birth to a little boy weighing six pounds, 12.5 ounces and paramedics arrived shortly after to take them both to hospital.

The couple already have three older children: daughters Chana, five; Rivka, three; and Elisheva, one.

Mum and baby were just fine, despite the ordeal - but the same cannot be said of the backseat of Raymond’s Lexus car!

“I don’t know if you’ve ever seen what happens when a baby comes out, but the seat was wrecked,” Niv said. He paid tribute to the Uber driver for remaining calm and helping his son enter the world safely.

“I think he was all part of the miraculous evening,” the new dad said, “because I can certainly imagine that if I showed up in a car, and two-and-a half-minutes later we’re in the middle of this maelstrom, there are certainly a lot of people who would be less calm and less accommodating.

"He was super chill, and I was very appreciative.”

The LA Fire Department also thanked Raymond in a Facebook post, naming him as the “primary assist” in helping to deliver the baby.

Erica and Niv have decided not to share the name of their little boy, but have ruled out the options of 'Uber' or 'Lexus'! Perhaps they’ll opt for Raymond instead…
