It’s vital that you are aware what signs indicate the possible presence of carbon monoxide in your home:
  • Sooting, staining or discolouration around appliances
  • Condensation on walls/windows
  • A strange smell when the appliance is on (remember, carbon monoxide itself has no smell, but other fumes produced by burning may smell)
  • A weak orange or yellow flame where normally it is blue for a gas appliance
  • Flu-like symptoms, such as drowsiness or headaches

A faulty appliance can lead to carbon monoxide poisoning so if you suspect an appliance may be in need of a service then make an appointment with a qualified service agent. It’s also important that you have your appliances serviced annually by a Registered Gas Installer, Registered Oil Technician or a qualified service agent for your fuel type.

There are also lots of other safety precautions you can take to help ensure that your home stays carbon monoxide free:
  • Fit one or more audible carbon monoxide alarms in your home
  • Ensure that all chimneys are swept regularly and are kept clear
  • Keep flues and chimneys unblocked
  • If you suspect an appliance may be faulty, stop using it immediately and arrange for a safety inspection.
  • Make sure that all rooms in your home are properly ventilated and that room vents are never blocked.
  • Use appliances only for the purpose for which they were designed, e.g do not use a cooker to heat a room or a barbeque indoors.
Carbon Monoxide Alarms

Use carbon monoxide alarms but remember these are no substitute for regular inspection and maintenances of appliances, vents, flues and chimneys.

Check that the carbon monoxide alarm complies with European Standard EN 50291 and carries both the CE mark and a mark of independent certification such as a Kitemark. Ensure that the alarm has an ‘end-of-life’ indicator.

Carbon monoxide alarms are available from most hardware and D.I.Y. stores.  Basic models will normally cost between €20 and €30. Always install alarms as per the manufacturers’ instructions. Some Registered Gas Installers will supply and fit carbon monoxide alarms in addition to servicing your appliance(s). Remember mone than one alarm may be required to provide adequate protection.
