When you become a parent, each and every single thing to do with your precious little bundle fascinates, delights and impresses you, but there exists one particular issue which can gain more traction than others.

Obsessing over your infant's eye colour is something which many new parents do as we marvel at the fact that this particular feature is, in fact, subject to change as our child matures.

Offering an insight into this particular physiological development, scientists explain that the change, which often becomes a talking-point among doting family members, is brought about the level of melanin contained within your baby's eye.

According to paediatric ophthalmologist, Douglas Frederick, the change is determined by the amount of a specific pigment which your child has meaning that the more melanin her or she has, the darker the eye colour they will have.

While Dr. Douglas, of Stanford Children's Health in California, explains that the amount of melanin contained within the eye will eventually determine the colour, it's important to remember that the melanin level increases as the child grows meaning the colour may continue to change before levelling out.

Most children experience a change in eye colour at approximately six months, but some children may not go through the process until their second year.
