Stephen Donnelly to outline details of publicly funded IVF treatment scheme

Minister for Health Stephen Donnelly is expected to announce the details of full funding for one cycle of IVF treatment later today after meetings in The Cabinet ahead of their Summer break.

It is understood that from September, one publicly funded cycle of IVF will be made available to those who are eligible and have had no more than one privately funded IVF cycle before.

Under this new scheme, up to three IUI (Intrauterine Insemination Treatment) may be covered for those who are deemed suitable for the treatment.

This will be the first time Assisted Human Reproduction (AHR) has been publicly funded in the State.

In the Budget 2023, €10 million was allocated for IVF treatment to begin the introduction of free infertility treatment such as this one.

Couples who would like to avail of this scheme will have to meet certain criteria in order to do so.

These guidelines, which are said to be confirmed later today by Stephen Donnelly and the Department of Health, will include an age limit and BMI limit.

Whether the couple have a known clinical cause of infertility and the number of existing children the couple have will also be taken into consideration when checking eligibility.

It is believed that those who require donated materials, such as donor eggs or sperm, will not be eligible for the funded treatment from September.

The HSE will have to finalise arrangements with private fertility clinics that have previously applied to take part in the IVF treatment scheme which is expected to roll-out on a 'phased basis'.
