Our WhatsApp groups are hopping with funny memes and talk of stocking up on wine, but it is no harm to be as prepared as possible for storm Ophelia - especially with the children at home.
The Department of Education confirmed that all schools and creches will be closed on Monday as the number of counties subject to a red weather warning increased.
The National Emergency Co-ordination Group warned that Hurricane Ophelia is the most powerful storm system to hit the country in 50 years.
So, what measures should we take, as parents, to ensure we are as prepared as possible?
1. Turn your fridge up a little colder and if your electricity goes, make sure to only open your fridge when needed. It is also a good idea to keep some extra ice-cubes in case you need to keep your food cold if your power goes and your fridge is out of action for a bit.
2. Let your kids help you prepare! It gives them a sense of control over the situation. Encourage them to help gathering torches or stockpiling boardgames.
3. Keep your torches, batteries and candles together somewhere handy to reach.
4. Turn your car alarm off so it doesn't go off during high winds.
5. Charge all your devices and download as much content as possible for kids so they have some games or movies to keep them amused.
6. If the storm hits at night, perhaps have a family sleepover so no little sleepheads wake up to the sounds of gale force winds.
7. If the wind gets really strong during the day, pull the blinds or shades and try to remain away from windows.
8. Have plenty of other activities like colours, puzzles as well as cards or boardgames to hand if the electricity goes.
9. Make sure any outdoor items like trampolines or garden furniture are secured.
10. Stay indoors. Take a pyjama day, and keep it all a bit of fun for the kids.
We are all hoping that Ophelia passes by without excess damage, but there is no harm in being as prepared as possible. Given that this is an unusual situation, your children will be looking to you for signals of how to react, so remain calm and in control.
