Liffey Fest: A Weekend by the River
Kicking things off this weekend, Liffey Fest takes place on 12 and 13 September along the waterfront, celebrating Dublin's iconic river with music, culture, food and family-friendly activities. It's one of those events that sounds almost deceptively simple, a weekend by the Liffey, but in practice it's a brilliant excuse to see the city from a different angle. Culture Night: The City Goes Late
If you can organise a babysitter (or if your kids are old enough to tag along for an evening), Culture Night on Friday 18 September is always worth making the effort for. Dublin city centre fills up with free performances, cultural events and unexpected experiences, and this year Dublin City Council is supporting the return of the Bandstand Stage on O'Connell Street. North Earl Street is also joining the programme for the first time, which adds a fresh slice of the north inner city to proceedings.

Discover Talbot Street: Food, Community and a Pop-Up Gaeltacht
This is the one that feels genuinely special. On 19 and 20 September, Talbot Street will be transformed into a free weekend festival running from 12pm to 5pm each day, celebrating the food, culture and community that make the street one of the most interesting in the city.
Discover Talbot Street isn't just a market or a music event. It's a proper celebration of the people who actually make the street what it is. That includes Jim Brennan of Tara Leathers, who has been part of Talbot Street since 1988 and is probably best known locally for an initiative that saw him repairing sleeping bag zips for people experiencing homelessness. It includes Abudullahi Ali of Marka Cadey, whose restaurant brings authentic Somali, African and Arabic cuisine to the street and has become a genuine community hub. And it includes Muirard Hughes, who will be hosting a Pop-Up Gaeltacht across the weekend, bringing Irish language conversation into one of the city's most multicultural neighbourhoods.
Alongside those stories, the festival will feature Brazilian and Somali food, artisan coffee from Central Brew, baked goods from The Wooden Whisk and flavours from Brazilian restaurants Recanto Brazil and Tucano Dublin. There will be live music, street entertainment, creative workshops and family activities running throughout both days.
It's the kind of event that reminds you why Dublin city centre is worth showing up for, and genuinely the sort of thing kids and adults will get something different from. The family activity programming means you won't just be standing around watching grown-ups eat Georgian food (though frankly that sounds fine too).
Dublin Theatre Festival: Coming Later in the Month
For parents who love theatre or who have slightly older children with a taste for something more structured, the Dublin Theatre Festival gets underway towards the end of September. One of Europe's leading arts festivals, it will feature productions at the Abbey and Gate theatres alongside venues across the city. September has a habit of feeling like a month that disappears before you've made the most of it.
