Kellogg’s knows that for school kids, a tasty breakfast can mean a happy morning. So the company is helping local communities across Ireland and the UK by supporting Breakfast Clubs, so kids are provided with the best start to the day.
So what are Breakfast Clubs?
As the name suggests, Breakfast Clubs are a place for kids to share the first meal of the day with their peers in a safe, nurturing environment – either in schools or other community settings. They usually start each morning around 8am, helping busy mums and dads drop their kids to school early so they can get to work on time.
Why is breakfast so important?
Research gleaned from the Kellogg’s report A Lost Education: the reality of hunger in the classroom (2013) shows that going to school on an empty stomach can significantly impact a child’s education. Rumbling tummies can mean tiredness, irritability and lack of concentration, all which hinder kids from achieving their full potential in school.
And how does Kellogg’s help?
Kellogg’s wants all kids to have the best possible morning start, so the company is aiming to become the leading corporate advocate for breakfast. Providing funding either to start up these Breakfast Clubs or to keep them going is just one way the company is setting out to achieve this.
What schools are involved?
In the last couple of years Kellogg’s has provided grants to over 100 schools all across Ireland. However, if you would like to set one up in your school or area, or get involved, you can get more information here.
What impact are the Clubs having?
A significant one. Breakfast Clubs promote the importance of a healthy brekkie and provide a place for children to get those much needed vitamins and minerals for the action-packed morning ahead. The Kellogg’s A Lost Education report (2013) surveyed 700 teachers, with 69 per cent saying that Breakfast Clubs had a positive impact on their ability to teach their class.
