Did you ever notice that you always hold your baby to a certain side?

It turns out it is not related to which side is stronger.

A study has shown that women are twice as likely to hold their baby to the left as their right, and it is biology's way of making you more in tune with your baby.

We have our brains to thank for that.

Studies have shown that instinctively holding your baby to the left side is because our brains are organised for understanding and interpreting faces and emotion.

We absorb information from the left side which goes straight to our brain's right hemisphere  - the side we process how our bub is doing.

This makes it easier for us to respond to our baby's needs - I knew there was an upside of being a walking ball of emotional during those early baby days

The experiment, carried out by Sussex University, is interesting because they tested 32 people including 12 men. The findings showed that females showed an overwhelming preference to cradle on the left.

Historically, many paintings and even statues of the Virgin Mary always depict women holding their baby to the left.

Researcher, Dr Brenda Todd, said her findings showed that:

"For mothers with typical brain organisation, left is the optimum position for interpreting the infant state. Men were not found to have a left cradling bias"

Other explanations over the years for favouring the left were because the mum's heartbeat soothed a child when held close and that a baby's left ear would be left open to hear affection and tone of voice which would travel straight to the right side of their brains - the side that handles emotions.

What do you do? Let us know if you cradle to the right or the left!
