The West Cork Resort That Feels More Palm Springs Than Rural Ireland

If the words "adult-only boutique hotel" make your shoulders drop two inches, you're not alone. There's something about the phrase that carries with it the promise of a full night's sleep, a hot coffee consumed at an actual table and absolutely nobody demanding to watch something on your phone. Now imagine that hotel is in West Cork, overlooking the Atlantic, and it looks like Palm Springs decided to holiday in Ireland. That's The Little Island Resort — and it's rather special.

Nestled along the Wild Atlantic Way just outside Clonakilty, the resort sits overlooking Little Island Bay Beach at Owenahincha. What makes the story behind it genuinely lovely is that it was built — quite literally, hands and all — by two sisters from Kildare who had no hospitality background and clearly an enormous amount of determination.

From Derelict to Dreamy

The property was originally designed in the 1960s by German architect Klaus Kirsten. After sitting empty for more than 40 years it was, by anyone's measure, a forgotten building. Then Aislinn and Nicole O'Shea found it.

"When we first saw the property, we fell in love immediately and made an offer the next day," says Aislinn. "It had been empty for decades, but we could see exactly what it could become."

What it became is a California-cool, mid-century coastal hideaway with clean lines, sea views from the rooms and a vibe that feels nothing like rural Ireland and everything like somewhere you'd pin obsessively before a holiday. The sisters did much of the physical work themselves — plastering, grouting, wall-building — preserving the building's original bones while giving it a proper new life.

Nicole describes their approach to running the place with the same intentionality they brought to rebuilding it. "Our goal is to make the resort as self-sustaining as possible," she says. "We think carefully about every decision – how we build, how we operate, and how we host." Sustainability runs through everything here, from kitchen practices to landscaping to waste management.

Genuinely Dog-Friendly (and Solo-Traveller Friendly Too)

The resort is adult-only, which makes it a brilliant option for anyone who needs a proper reset — whether that's a solo escape, a trip with a best friend or a quiet few days with a partner. And unlike those places that claim to be pet-friendly but make you feel faintly apologetic for having a dog, The Little Island Resort has actually designed select rooms to accommodate four-legged guests in comfort and style.

Sea View Rooms start from €190 per night and Pet Friendly Sea View Rooms from €200 per night. Given what you're getting — those views, a personalised pillow menu, complimentary drinks on arrival — it feels like a fair trade for a genuine escape.

Swim Club Deli and the Sunday Ritual

At the centre of the resort is the Swim Club Deli, a café with the kind of laid-back beach energy that makes you want to stay for hours. Speciality coffee, seasonal soups, salads, sandwiches, baked goods, all-day pizzas and a cocktail and mocktail menu round out the offering. Locals are welcome too, which tells you something about the spirit of the place.

Sundays have their own ritual here: a sea swim at Owenahincha Beach followed by coffee and cake. It's the kind of simple plan that sounds almost radical after months of packed lunches and school runs and the relentless hum of ordinary life.

For those who want to explore further, the resort is just minutes from Clonakilty town and well-placed for West Cork's beaches, hiking trails and food scene. Complimentary bikes, picnic lunches, blankets and rain gear are all available — so you're set regardless of what the sky decides to do.

If you've been half-promising yourself a proper break, this might be the one worth booking. Find out more and check availability at thelittleisland.ie.
