When it comes to naming our children, most of us mums want to avoid choosing a name that five or six other kids in their class will have.

If you are looking for something that bit different, you might want to avoid naming your next baby girl Sophia or Sofia - as it the most popular name across the globe.

According to experts, it is a favourite in nine countries, including Mexico, Russia and Italy, and comes in second or third place in at least 20 others.

"It just blew me away that so many different languages and cultures would arrive at the same sound at the same time. I guess that really says something about the way culture is transmitted today," Laura Wattenberg, the expert who analysed the name, told Live Science.

Revealing her thoughts on why it is so popular, Ms Wattenberg said that it is easy to pronounce in different languages and means wisdom.

However, as more and more parents search for a unique name for their little one, we're sure it won’t be long before Sophia is replaced with something else.
