This is gut-wrenching and so, so real.

An advertisement, released by SickKids Foundation in the US, has gone viral for a very good reason.

It captures perfectly the anguish and courage of mums trying to come to terms with having a seriously ill child.

It shows a few different mothers, each battling their emotions in a different way - one woman sits in her car alone, punching the steering wheel, overcome by the unfairness of her child's diagnoses. Another breaks down in tears as she practices some kind of medical procedure on a baby doll, presumably in preparation for dealing with her own sick baby.

But the part that gets you right in the gut is the moment when the tempo shifts and the mums wipe away their tears and banish their sadness, quietly whispering to themselves; 'you got this' before greeting their child with a big smile.

That is the courage of mums.

This powerful video has been viewed half a million times on YouTube with thousands of responses from parents who have experienced similar and those who are still fighting to stay strong for their little ones.

One poster said: "Thank you for making this for us. We needed someone to see and hear us."

Another left a message saying: "What a beautiful video! My son has needed a feeding tube the past 2 years and this video really resonated with me. Especially the "get up," and the "you got this."

While a dad writes: "Bravo! Stay strong, Mums! ... Hold on tight, Dads."

The most heartbreaking part is that many of the women featured in the ad are real mums with sick children.

The foundation released the ad in support of mums to mark Mother's day in the US.

And for those asking 'where are the dads?' they have a similar video aimed at the strength of dads. But that's for another day.

This will move even the most stoic of us to tears. And snot.
