Most of us don’t give a second thought to throwing out the puzzles our little ones have outgrown, or have more missing pieces than not.

But before reaching for the bin, perhaps think about how this tattered old jig-saw or board game could be used to create a beautiful piece of art for your child’s room - or in fact, any other room in the house.

German artist Miriam Nolte created this large wall piece (main picture) by taking old puzzle pieces, organising them by colour, painstakingly laying them out on a canvas, and then gluing them on.

While most busy mums simply don’t have the hours to spare for something this intricate, there are lot of ways to transform old puzzles into an eye-catching work of art to spruce up that blank wall.

You can choose any colour or spatial design, and get the kids to help out with sorting and laying out the pieces.

And why stop at a piece for the wall?

Recycling old puzzles can bring that bland coffee table to life, create a striking picture frame for that treasured family snap, or even give a plain quilt, blanket or throw a punch of colour and character for your little one’s room.
