The general treatment of a stye begins at home with the application of a damp warm washcloth to the affected area. Heat is used to increase the blood flow to the eye which helps the immune system to fight off infection. It also helps to open the blocked oil gland and helps remove pus. The water should be quite warm but never hot. Always test the temperature of the water first. The warm washcloth should then be applied to the eyelid of the closed eye for 10 to 15 minutes three or four times a day. You should see an improvement in the appearance of the stye within 24 hours.

You should never attempt to pop or burst the stye as this can irritate the eyelid further and spread the bacteria. The stye should be allowed to drain naturally. Depending on the severity of the stye your doctor may prescribe antibiotic ointments which will help prevent the spread of infection.

As a last resort your G.P. may have to drain the stye if it doesn’t heal by itself but this is uncommon.
