This summer, instead of wasting beautiful sunny days lazing about in your back garden or cooping yourself up in the house when it’s raining, why not make a goal to try to hit as many of Ireland’s most beautiful spots as you can.

To avoid having to deal with traffic chaos and petrol prices, hop on the train - Iarnród Éireann will take you from A to B in comfort and style. Not only will you get there hassle-free, but you’ll also get to soak up as much of the beautiful scenery as possible while you relax with the kids for an hour or two.

1. Galway City, Co. Galway
Whether you fancy taking a selfie at the Spanish Arch, enjoying a picnic at Eyre's Square or taking in the buzz of Trad music, quirky Galway has it all. Gorgeous small boutiques and cafés line the Latin Quarter and the streets are always hopping with family-fun and excitement.

2. Killarney,  Co. Kerry
Killarney town is one of the most stunning places that you will ever be lucky enough to experience. Whether you take off on the Kerry Way walking trail, soak up the scenery of the Killarney National Park or hop on the Killarney Tourist Train that will take you to places like Ross Castle and Muckross Abbey, you are in for a treat.

3. Rosses Point, Co. Sligo
You have no doubt heard Rosses Point being mentioned in the weather forecast, but there is more to this gorgeous little town than whether it’s going to rain or not. Head to the Metal Man lighthouse while you’re there; the Lady Waiting on the Shore – a monument dedicated to women left behind when their lovers went to sea – is another must-see.

  4. Waterford City, Co. Waterford
Known for its fish delicacies, Waterford city is one for foodie-lovers. From breakfast right up to dinner (and beyond), the gorgeous little restaurants that line the town will have you heading home a few sizes bigger! And if you have a few hours to spare, why not hop on a bus to Dunmore East for some shopping or a wander along the beach? The perfect way to spend the day.

  5. Old Head Beach, Co. Westport
Whether your little one wants to build sandcastles, do some exploring or simply enjoy an ice-cream, Old Head is perfect. A great spot for snorkeling and soaking up the sun (if and when we get some), you’ll be treated to a traditional beach holiday feel – even if you are only going to be there for a few hours.

6. Malahide, Co. Dublin
This wonderful little seaside town is close enough to the city centre to be able to spend a hour or two there but far enough for you to feel the benefit of the wonderful sea air and quaint little cafés. Wander around the beautiful boutiques before taking the road train to Malahide Castle – the kids will love running around the stunning gardens.

  7. Fota Wildlife Park, Co. Cork
A true mecca for animal lovers, the aim of the 100-acre park is to inspire visitors to understand the natural world as well as educate and entertain. Whether your little one is into wallabies, apes, lemurs, cheetahs, kangaroos, seals or zebras, they are guaranteed to love it here. A great way to spend the day, the train will drop you right at the entrance to the park.

8. Botanic Gardens, Belfast
A great place to unwind and relax, the Botanic Gardens in Belfast is truly stunning. Admission is free and the large greenhouse is a sight for itself: the curved iron and hundreds of glass planes will make you say ‘wow’ before you are even treated to the incredible exotic plants that grow inside.

  9. Rosslare Strand, Co. Wexford
The sunny south east never fails to impress, and it is the best place to soak up a glorious day. Not only is Wexford town close by – and likely to be buzzing – the Strand has one of the most wonderful sandy beaches that you could even imagine. Fly a kite or take a dip – the miles of sandy beach will treat you well. And when you get hungry, there are plenty of little restaurants and eateries to satisfy your hunger.

  10. Greystones, Co. Wicklow
Located on the east coast, this quaint little town is home to a blue flag beach and plenty of gorgeous little family-friendly restaurants. From shopping to adventures, Greystones will keep the entire family entertained for the whole day.
