If your skin is prone to spots and blemishes or simply in need of a boost, you might want to consider going to a day spa for a facial treatment. In this article we discuss the different types of facials and how they work, to better equip you for a visit to your day spa.

Many spas will offer special facials especially formulated for keeping wrinkles and acne at bay, whilst most will offer the basic facial.
Whilst every spa will have their own unique menu of services types of facials include the following; anti- aging, hydration, teen (specifically for younger skin to help get rid of blemishes) and bio-lift facials. Other types include alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) facials, collagen facials, galvanic and aromatherapy facials.

Before you get a facial
It is important that your aesthetician carefully analyses your skin type so that they can properly recommend which type of treatment is best for you. A facial treatment should be customised to suit your skin type and to address any skin concerns that you might have such as dehydration or an uneven skin tone.

What happens during a facial treatment?
Although each spa will apply their own techniques when performing a facial treatment, generally products will be used that complement the skin in question.
The steps involved in a standard facial usually starts with a deep cleansing of the pores before the skin is exfoliated with a scrub or manual exfoliation tool. After this, the skin is treated to a steam session and then a facial masque application before the masque is removed with either a hot towel, or thorough a skin rinse. Then, you get a lovely and relaxing facial massage followed by blackhead extraction, a second cleansing session and finally some toning and moisturising.

How will your skin look after a facial treatment?
You should leave the spa with gorgeous, dewy, clear skin. Results should be evident for a few weeks afterwards. If you can, it is recommended to get a series of spa facials as over the long term, they can reduce the signs of aging and sun damage amongst other benefits.

A facial at a day spa is a great way to give your dull skin a little boost. Even if you don’t have an underlying skin condition or complaint, it’s a relaxing way to revive your skin's healthy glow.
