The ninth annual Culture Night takes place this year on Friday, 19th September. This year promises to be an evening of fun and entertainment with plenty of free events, tours and performances for the whole family.
 
Starting at 5pm, events will take place in 36 regions, towns and cities all across Ireland until 11pm that night with museums, galleries, libraries and government buildings staying open late especially for the event.
 
Here are the highlights from around the country:
 
Dublin
 
The Open University Creative Writing evening, Dublin City Centre
The Open University (OU) will be hosting a free creative writing event from 4pm – 7pm. The evening will include recitals by Creative Writing students and guests will have the opportunity to take part in open-mic sessions. It will take place at the Open University, Holbrook House, Holles Street. For further information have a look here.
 
Archery classes for children, Loughlinstown
Taking place in Loughlinstown, the classes will teach kids the basics and safety of archery. Classes are for kids aged between eight and 18, with each age group on a various times. Click here for details.
 
Children’s Short Films, Dun Laoghaire
The Pavilion Theatre will be hosting two short films for kids aged between three and eight. The first show, recommended for 3+ will start at 4pm while shows recommended for kids aged eight and over will start at 5:30pm. Check out what will be shown here:
 
Dublinia, Dublin City Centre  
Why not travel back in time to medieval Dublin this Friday. The museum will be open from 5:30 – 8:00pm. Check out the website for more details.
 
Outside of Dublin
 
Story time, Co. Cavan
Story time and colouring will take place in Cavan library from 3:30,
 
Set Sail Culture Night, Co. Sligo
Set Sail Culture Night for Kids takes place with Monkeyshine Theatre in Sligo. Advanced booking is recommended for this.
 
Ballina Arts Centre, Co. Mayo
Arts and crafts will take place at Ballina Arts Centre where there will be workshops, games and face painting. There will also be a screen in Kings from 6:00pm.
 
City Hall Plaza, Cork City
There will be plenty of family fun at the City Hall Plaza in Cork City. Music will gone from 5:00 – 10:00pm and there will be performances by musicians from Music Generation Cork City programmes from 5:00 – 7:00pm.
 
Sand Pit Excavation, Co. Kilkenny
Kids can join in some medieval fun in Kilkenny with two archaeological excavation workshops, lasting two hours each, taking place.
 
Creative workshops at The Hub, Co. Limerick
Taking place in the Limerick City Gallery of Art, the workshop will look at Dennis McNulty’s exhibition PROTOTYPES and, through lots of cardboard and building, it will make kids look at making their own small space.
