A mother in northern India has given birth to conjoined twins.

According to reports, Urmila Sharma was too poor to be able to afford an ultrascan and only discovered two weeks before giving birth that there was a possibility that she could have twins.

The baby girls share one body but both have a head, neck and spine.  The twins, who have yet to be named, were delivered by Caesarean section on Wednesday.

The 28-year-old mum and her husband already have a daughter and are understandably upset. Dr. Shikha Malik who delivered the conjoined twins said: ‘The parents are very distressed and we are helping the family the best we can. We only came to know she was carrying conjoined twins after an ultrasound two weeks ago but it was too late to do anything by then."

Doctors think their chance of survival are slim but are keeping them under close observation in the neonatal intensive care unit. Dr. Malik said: "Now the baby is born we will do our best to save her and we hope to operate once her condition is more stable."
