For every story documenting heartbreaking fertility struggles, there is a heartwarming tale of a ‘miracle’, and the following report is a reminder to never, ever give up hope.

A Canadian couple are celebrating, after being told that their premature and ‘extremely rare’ identical triplet daughters are now 'thriving'.

Mahalia and Mike Meeuwsen hit the headlines back in November, when they welcomed identical sisters Hannah, Rileigh and Isabelle into the world. The tots were born prematurely, with each one weighing less than four pounds.

What made their news even more special was the fact that they had resigned themselves to never having a family of their own, having encountered unexplained fertility problems. Indeed, Mahalia thought she was going through menopause last April when she discovered she was pregnant!

After doing an initial pregnancy test with her doctor, the 43-year-old was told that she was pregnant, with a scan confirming that she was expecting twins. It was an ultrasound, a few weeks later, that revealed she was actually expecting triplets.

The little tots were born on November 3, prematurely, after Mahalia’s health deteriorated. After a number of weeks spent in hospital, however, the little ones returned home at the end of last month, and have been doing “extremely well”, according to their doctor.

Reflecting on their rollercoaster year to local media, delighted mother Mahalia said this week: “There are still days now that Mike and I look at each other and we just can’t believe the blessing. It is so hard to believe that these three little miracles are part of our family.”
