Only yesterday, Netflix made headlines around the world with its novel approach to parental leave, and it seems as though they have started something of a trend.

Just a day later, computer giant Microsoft has unveiled a new and improved parental leave policy, which will offer employees more paid time spent in the home with a newborn or an adopted child.

The current provisions see Microsoft employees entitled to eight weeks paid maternity leave, as well as another 12 weeks (four paid; eight unpaid) of parental leave for new parents.

Under the new provisions however, as of this coming November, all 12 weeks of the parental leave will be paid, giving new mums a total of 20 weeks' worth of paid leave.

Furthermore, mums-to-be will be entitled to take two weeks off ahead of their due date as short-term disability.

The company’s Executive Vice President for Human Resources, Kathleen Hogan, said: “As we ask our employees to bring their ‘A’ game to work every day to achieve our mission, we believe it’s our responsibility to create an environment where people can do their best work.”

“A key component of this is supporting our employees with benefits that matter most to them,” she added.
