This is the heart-warming story of when the mother, of one of Scotland’s youngest surviving babies got to hold her daughter for the first time.

Claire Cressey is seen cuddling and kissing her baby daughter Emily, for the first time on Mother’s Day.

Emily was born on February 27, weighing just 1lb 3oz and was orginally too vulnerable to be held.

However, doctors at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh were so impressed with Emily’s progress since then, that they felt Mother’s day was the perfect first time for mother and daughter to bond.

The cuddle between Claire and Emily was initially supposed to last 10 minutes but since Emily responded so well to her mother’s touch they extended it to 20 minutes.

Doctors have said that Emily is doing “fantastic” and that she is “thriving” and now weighs 1lb 10 oz.

Claire said it was frightening when they first took Emily out of the incubator as she could fit in the palm of your hand but Emily “coped really well”.

“Actually holding her was quite a shock because it was only then that I realised just how tiny she is. To me she is perfect and I’m very lucky.”

Claire and her husband Alan have been sharing Emily’s journey on Facebook and have received messages of support from all over the world.
