When your child plays, what he or she is really doing is learning. That’s why it’s so important that you encourage your child to play as much as possible. Here are a few ways you can do that for your newborn, from birth to three months:

Engage your newborn’s senses. Choose toys that he or she can look at, see, smell or hear.

Play music, and dance with your child! Put him or her in a baby carrier, and spend some time dancing around the house – just stick to gentle tunes at this age!

Always keep a collection of small items that your baby can touch and look at on hand. These can be anything that your baby can’t swallow, and that won’t hurt him or her.

Just staring at interesting items is a great learning experience for your newborn. Choose items with interesting textures, colors, or those that make noises for maximum effect.

Spend some time looking through your cupboard, and select any items of clothing that have interesting textures or colors. Beaded items, soft angora or anything else that has tactile appeal will probably fascinate your newborn.

Don’t forget the mobile! Mobiles that turn or play a tune are usually a big hit with your baby, but you can make your own temporary ones. Just tie a few ribbons to a hanger, or small objects to string, and dangle them above your baby. Even though he or she is unlikely to reach out for them, it is fascinating for them to watch!

Sing! You might have the worst voice ever, but your child doesn’t know that yet. Sing along to songs, or have fun using different voices when you sing – your baby will love it, and it’s fun for you too!
