Tasty, delicious and easy enough to grow, strawberries make a welcome addition to any fruits and vegetables patch.

Between early summer and early autumn is the ideal time to start growing your very own, so why not get the kids involved and make a start this weekend?

Here’s how to grow your very own strawberries:

1. Make sure your soil is well-drained, rich in nutrients and weed-free.

2. Make sure you plant them in full sun, away from the wind.

3. Prepare the soil by adding compost and digging it over.

4. Plant at least 13 inches apart and remove any ripe strawberries before they rot.

5. Cover with a net to stop animals getting near them and try to keep early leaves up off the soil with straw, especially in the early growing stages.

6. Water regularly and remove any weeds as soon as you spot them.

7. Feed them every two weeks with a product high in potassium – tomato feed can work well although you can ask your local garden centre for recommendations.

8. Remove any fruits as soon as they appear as they can rot on the plant.

Remember, it can take around three months for your strawberries to grow so give it some time.
