It has been almost two years since Rio Ferdinand lost his wife Rebecca to cancer, and the former footballer has admitted that he still ‘hasn’t grieved properly’.

Rebecca Ellison passed away in May 2015, after a brave battle with breast cancer, leaving Rio and their three children – Lorenzo, Tate and Tia – behind.

In an new documentary set to air in the spring on BBC, the 38-year-old ex-Manchester United star speaks candidly about the heartbreaking loss of his ‘soulmate’.

In Rio Ferdinand: Being Mum and Dad, the star admits: “I don’t think I’ve grieved properly. I’ve not given myself that time to sit down and really flush everything out.”

A BBC spokesperson has described the show as a ‘revealing and immensely personal documentary exploring the complexities of grief’.

At the time of Rebecca’s passing, Rio shared a moving tribute to the mum-of-three: “Rebecca, my wonderful wife, passed away peacefully after a short battle with cancer at the Royal Marsden Hospital in London.”
