It was just days after giving birth to her second child that Giovanna Fletcher found herself body-shamed over her post-baby figure, and now she has a very powerful message to send.
The author, who has two children with husband Tom, shared her experiences and thoughts on the subject of body-shaming during an interview on ITV’s Lorraine today.
Recalling the now infamous anecdote from last February, when a stranger laughed at her ‘mummy tummy’, Giovanna revealed that the comments only got worse as the year went on.
“It was worse five months later, when I was asked if I was pregnant again,” she admitted.
Giovanna, who is mum to two-year-old Buzz and nine-month-old Buddy, urged people to focus on what the body achieves during pregnancy rather than the ‘post-baby’ figure.
“You are so appreciative of your body for growing a human and, all of a sudden, it’s out and you’re like, ‘Ugh’, and ‘It shouldn’t be like this’ – but you should be appreciative of that,” she said.
She added: “Some mums are gym-goers, and that’s amazing; others not – that’s their choice. Really, we just need a little less judgement and a lot more kindness.”
We couldn’t agree more. Everyone needs to pay heed to Giovanna’s comments – our bodies are amazing, and no one should feel pressure to ‘snap back’ into shape after having a baby.
