While the vast majority of high-profile names accompany their baby announcement with a tender snap of their little one's footprints or a line or two about the delivery, Facebook founder and CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, decided to go a little further this week.

In addition to announcing their arrival of his baby daughter Max, the 31-year-old social media tycoon revealed that he and his wife Priscilla have decided to donate 99% of their Facebook shares - a figure which stands at a whopping $45 billion - to charity, in an effort to better the world his little girl will grow up in.

Taking to Facebook (obviously!) to share their incredible plan with the world, the internet entrepreneur and his wife of three years left many speechless as they unveiled their intentions and paid tribute to their firstborn.

Sharing a tender snap of the new family, Mark wrote: "Priscilla and I are so happy to welcome our daughter Max into this world! For her birth, we wrote a letter to her about the world we hope she grows up in."

In an incredibly compelling message to his newborn daughter, the inspiration for smash film The Social Network wrote: "Your mother and I don’t yet have the words to describe the hope you give us for the future. Your new life is full of promise, and we hope you will be happy and healthy so you can explore it fully. You’ve already given us a reason to reflect on the world we hope you live in."

In words which will resonate with parents around the globe, Mark continues: "Like all parents, we want you to grow up in a world better than ours today."

While acknowledging the progress and technological advances we have made as a global society thus far, Mark insists more needs to be done, continuing: "We will do our part to make this happen, not only because we love you, but also because we have a moral responsibility to all children in the next generation."

The proud new father, who has been in a relationship with Max's mother for 12 years, then takes time to consider society's shortcomings with regards to healthcare and scientific research before going onto consider the role he and his wife can play in society's advancement.

"Once we recognise that your generation and your children’s generation may not have to suffer from disease, we collectively have a responsibility to tilt our investments a bit more towards the future to make this reality. Your mother and I want to do our part," he tells his daughter in a letter which has been circulating extensively online.

Mark goes on to consider the implications that poor healthcare, lack of education and poverty can have on the individual child before insisting that he and his wife are determined to play their part in improving life for future generations.

"We will give 99% of our Facebook shares — currently about $45 billion — during our lives to advance this mission. We know this is a small contribution compared to all the resources and talents of those already working on these issues. But we want to do what we can, working alongside many others."

Concluding the moving piece, Mark reiterates the impact Max has had on the couple's life thus far, finishing: "Max, we love you and feel a great responsibility to leave the world a better place for you and all children. We wish you a life filled with the same love, hope and joy you give us."

"We can’t wait to see what you bring to this world," he tells the little girl whose birth will forever be associated with philanthropy, generosity and altruism.

This has got to be one our favourite baby announcements of all time.
