They say that it’s the most wonderful time of the year, but this often isn’t the case for everyone – especially those less fortunate in and around our communities.

One person who is adamant on making a difference this festive season is comedian and actor Brendan O’Carroll, who has arranged for 2,500 families in the greater Dublin area to receive Christmas dinner this festive season.

The brains behind the hugely successful Mrs Brown’s Boys has donated turkey and ham vouchers to the East Region of the Society of St Vincent de Paul (SVP), and his gesture will ensure that families previously facing into hunger this Christmas Day will enjoy a festive meal.

This latest gesture is just the latest act of charity carried out by O’Carroll, and SVP’s East Region President, Liam Casey, has paid tribute to his generosity.

"The continuous generosity of Brendan is unbelievable. It is an imaginative yet practical way to help many families in need. Our volunteers know that the families who benefit from his generosity not only appreciate his action but take extra pleasure in knowing that it comes with the compliments of Mrs Brown, an iconic and internationally famous Dublin mother,” said Mr Casey.

With the Region expected to have processed over 65,000 calls for help before the end of the year, we can all learn a lesson from Brendan’s gesture. Here are some ways that you can help out SVP and other worthy causes this festive season:

1. Make a donation, no matter how small

Donations are always appreciated, especially at this time of the year, no matter how great or small. This is also a valuable lesson for your children to learn, so set an example by donating while you are out together. Ask the collector to explain the charity’s work and the difference your donation will make.

2. Opt for charity Christmas cards

Even in an age where technology reigns, sending out Christmas cards is one of our favourite festive traditions. Rather than heading straight for the fanciest or most expensive cards this year however, why not invest in some charity cards? That way, you’re putting a smile on a loved one’s face while giving back to a worthy cause.

3. Do some carolling

Again, this is a great way to raise awareness of the importance of charity for your little ones. If you and your family are so inclined, why not enquire about joining a charity carolling choir, and go door-to-door; not only will this get you into the festive spirit, but it will also bring the true meaning of Christmas home to your children.
