She previously gave an insight into the heartbreak of being abandoned by her mum when she was a young child, and now Davina McCall has opened up on how it has affected her own approach to parenting.

The presenter, whose mum returned to her home country of France when Davina was just three years old, has admitted that her abandonment issues have often made her a paranoid parent.

Davina – who is mum to 13-year-old Holly, 11-year-old Tilly and seven-year-old Chester with husband Matthew Robertson – recalled how guilty she used to feel when collecting her kids from nursery.

“When my children were at nursery, my husband Matthew pointed out that it didn’t matter if I was five minutes late to pick them up one day. They weren’t standing there, like I did, wondering if their mum was going to come because she didn’t come the previous day,” the 47-year-old said.

In a heartbreaking admission, the mum-of-three added: “It took me a long time to get my head around the fact I don’t have to be perfect all the time.”

Having spent her early and teenage years living with her grandparents after her mother’s departure, Davina admitted that she takes every opportunity to tell her children just how much they mean to her.

“I tell my children they are the making of me. It’s not up to them to fix me, but they have meshed me together. They are phenomenal,” she said.

What a beautiful tribute to her little ones and the healing power that children can bring.
