There was some devastating news yesterday, as it was reported that former New Zealand All Blacks rugby star Jerry Collins and his wife, Alana Madill, died in a tragic accident in France.

While the couple were reportedly killed instantly in the car crash, their three-month-old daughter Ayla was left in a critical condition, being taken to Montpellier Hospital for treatment.

With news that little Ayla is fighting for her life, Collins’ former colleagues from the world of rugby have begun travelling to France, to be at the baby’s hospital bedside at this crucial time.

Family spokesman Tim Castle, who confirmed the devastating news yesterday, issued a statement about the players’ moving gesture.

Castle revealed that players including Neemia Tialata and Chris Masoe, along with their wives, are on their way to Montpellier “to be with Jerry and to be with little Ayla”.

When asked for an update on Ayla’s condition, Castle added: “The doctors will give a definitive assessment of her condition in the next 48 hours. She is facing a tough battle.”

The couple are reported to have encountered technical problems with their car when the accident occurred. Their vehicle is believed to have lurched in the road before being struck by an oncoming bus.

Our thoughts are with the Collins family, and we are praying for Ayla’s recovery.
