It seems like the key ingredients to a happy marriage do not consist of a grand romantic gestures. Instead, it’s the little things that help keep the spark alive.

A US study found that one of the biggest secrets to being happily married is saying ‘I love you’ on a regular basis. Reminding your partner that you still love them through words and actions help retain closeness and intimacy in a relationship.

Those who participated in the study also felt that simply admitting one another’s faults and saying sorry when necessary play a key role in maintaining a healthy marriage.

A spokesman for the study said: “Everyone wants to have a perfect marriage and it seems that the little things such as kissing and cuddling really are important. While they might seem insignificant, it's the little gestures which can help couples retain their closeness and intimacy.”

Although everyone enjoys a good cuddle with their significant other, it’s a common fact that marriage isn’t always a walk in the park.

The study also found that three arguments a month was also listed among one of the secrets to having a harmonious relationship – who ever would have thought that arguing is healthy.
