While we are forever being told to invest in key pieces that will take us through all four seasons with ease, there are certain garments that just scream ‘summer’. Here are our top 10 warm-weather wardrobe must-haves that will take you from day to night.

1. Loose trousers

Whether you opt for sweeping palazzo pants or baggy harem trousers, a loose-fitting pair are a must-have this season. They are light enough to allow you to cool down in the heat, and versatile enough to work well with your flip-flops, sandals and wedge heels.

2. Flowing skirt

Depending on your style preference, a light, flowing mini, midi or maxi skirt is a summer wardrobe staple. Again, this will keep you cool, and can be dressed up or down, depending on your plans for the day.

3. White blazer

There is something about the colour white that we just automatically associate with summer, isn’t there? The beauty of a white blazer is that you can pop it over just about anything – from your favourite little black dress to your more elaborate printed outfit – and it will instantly lighten up your look.

4. Wedges

Wedges are a beloved summer footwear staple for good reason – not only do they match our light fabrics perfectly, but they are also super-comfy. A nude pair will set off your boldest, brightest prints, while a crazy colourful pair will add a touch of summer magic to your basic black.

5. Straw bag

You could be wearing your most basic leggings and oversized T-shirt, and a beautiful, classic straw bag will instantly inject a summer vibe into your look.

6. Light anorak

Unfortunately, we are not blessed with scorching climes, and we’re likely to experience quite a few rainy days this summer. While it’s no time to be dragging your heavy pea-coat out of the wardrobe, a light anorak is always good to have to hand.

Tip: Pick up on this season’s military/ safari trend by opting for a khaki green number.

7. Flattering all-in-one

We’re not specifying playsuit or jumpsuit here, as there are so many different styles to suit every shape. In the warm weather, you want something that’s not too fussy and that allows your arms and legs to breathe, and an all-in-one is a stylish alternative to a formal dress.

8. Sundress

There is nothing nicer than stepping out on a hot summer’s day wearing a light sundress that not only fits like a glove, but allows your skin to breathe. Spend time trying on different styles until you find that ‘it’ dress that you can throw on with flip-flops or pumps for your casual days.

9. Linens

Like the colour white, linen is one fabric that just screams ‘summer’. Invest in some pretty linens in the form of trousers, light jackets, tops, shirts and dresses, and you cannot put a foot wrong in the style stakes this summer.

10. Loose white blouse

This lighter alternative to your staple white shirt will go with absolutely anything and everything in your wardrobe, from your neutral shades to your pastels; your bold prints to your colour block pieces.
