Isn’t it annoying when your favourite lipstick doesn’t make it through the afternoon, never mind the day? Follow our tips on how to keep your lip colour on your lips, where it should be!

Exfoliate your lips regularly
For lip colour that stays in place, it is recommended to exfoliate your lips on a weekly basis. In the same way that your skin benefits from a good rub down that removes dry, flaky layers, so do your lips. Removing dead skin gives lipstick a smooth surface to stick to.
Lips have thin and delicate skin so it’s important to smooth them very gently using a very soft tooth brush to remove dead skin and increase blood flow to the lips, giving a fuller, flushed pout before you apply lipstick.

Hydrate with lip balm
Apply lip balm 10 minutes before applying lipstick to hydrate your lips. This allows moisture soak in and ensures that your lip colour connects with your skin. If you are tight for time, applying lip balm first allows you to work on the rest of your makeup whilst it sinks in.

Prime your lips
Priming increases your lipstick’s staying power as well as helping to keep your lips soft. Priming is an important step whether you’re applying eye shadow, foundation, or lip colour. It helps fill in lines, allowing for more even colour application. Be sure to let the primer dry a bit before putting on your lipstick as primer gets tacky as it dries, allowing lipstick to stick to it better, making it last longer.

Use lip liner
Lipsticks that are not specifically long-wearing should be accompanied by lip liner. Choose a shade that compliments your lipstick as lip liner not only serves as a reserve layer of pigment when the colour begins to wear off but it also creates a barrier. Always shade the whole lips if you want it to last longer. Ensure you line both upper and lower lips and then fill them in with lipstick.

Set with powder
To help your lipstick stay on longer, use a light dusting of translucent powder over it, this gives the lip colour a dry base to adhere to. Apply another thin layer of colour, and you can award your lipstick immovable status!
