It may be a merry occasion, but there is no denying that Christmas is definitely one of the most expensive times of year. From buying presents for everyone, attending countless numbers of parties and doing the festive food shop it's very easy to spend more than you would like.

However, with a few savvy tips under your belt and a little bit of preparation you can save yourself a fortune and still enjoy the day.

1. Skip on all the trimmings
Don’t throw something in the trolley just because it’s a traditional Christmas ingredient – if you don’t like Brussels sprouts skip them.

2. Make some gifts
Christmas cookies, cupcakes or even a small pudding would make a great gift for your kid’s teacher this year.

3. Book your train ticket now
You’ll save yourself a fortune by getting in there early.

4. Utilise Secret Santa
Secret Santa is not just for the office or your friends, so why not organise it among your family as well to really keep the cost down.

5. Look for discounts
Online, in store, anywhere you can think of basically! There are plenty of bargains to be had if you know where to look.

6. Sell what you already have
If you have a lot of toys clogging up the playroom or clothes that you haven’t worn in at least six months, sell them. You can make yourself some extra cash for the festive season.

7. Switch to Bord Gáis Energy
If you switch this Christmas, Bord Gáis Energy are offering new consumers* €100 back off their bill plus a further 10% off electricity. As the nights get colder and the heating goes on, you can be kept warm and happy all winter long, knowing that you have taken the pain out of your January bill.

8. Search online
While going into the shops is one way to really experience Christmas you’re more likely to pick up a bargain online. It’s also a lot easier to shop this way!

9. Use your coupons
Check your handbag, car and even your bedside cabinet for any coupons that might have gone astray, and use them!

10. Cut delivery cost
Try to buy your items from the same online shops to cut down the cost of delivery. Alternatively, ask a colleague or a friend if they are buying from a certain website and share the cost that way.

11. Cut down on the Christmas list
You don’t have to buy a gift for every single person you know. In fact, you’ll be surprised by how relieved someone can be when you say you’re cutting down – remember, the receiver will always feel obligated to buy a gift back.

12. Get cheap cuts of turkey
It all tastes the same when it’s covered in gravy and mashed potatoes!

13. Don’t shell out unnecessary
You  don’t have to spend a fortune on a toy to know that it’s good. Kids are not retail snobs – well most of them!

14. What about eBay
You never know what bargain you might find hidden there – it’s great for getting something for the person who has everything!

15. Go on Skype
Friends not coming home for the festive season? Skip the expensive phone calls by sticking with Skype.

16. Make a list and check it twice
This way you won’t end up buying something you don’t need.

17. Post gifts early
This will save you having to pay for express delivery – get in there early.

18. Pick up something in the sales
There are so many bargains to be had right before Christmas so don’t get left behind!
