It can be pretty tricky to get kids to focus - the struggle to sit easy in a chair for five minutes is a nightmare, never mind five hours of concentration in school.

It’s understandable, yes, but we don’t want our kids missing out on important information in school or on crucial life experiences that will prevent them from reaching their full potential.

And while we cannot constantly micro-manage their little lives, there are ways in which we can help them get the most out of their experiences.

Take note, lovely mums:

Sleep is so important.

While we appreciate that bedtime can be a hassle sometimes, it is integral to a child's well-being that they are well rested. Your child is going to struggle to keep their eyes open, never mind stay focused on their teacher’s really long explanation of fractions, if they aren’t getting enough shut-eye. Make sure you have a nice bedtime routine, a story or bath to relax them and don't forget those lovely cuddles. Sweet dreams, little one.

Get them moving.

In order to reach their full potential, your little ones will need to be fit and healthy. This does NOT mean running marathons or cycling for hours every day. It simply means keeping active, whether it be through walking to school, or playing outside at lunch - we have to keep them moving. Also, a bit of exercise each day will help them sleep better, so what's not to love? We love playing hop scotch or their newest favourite game: Rock, paper, scissors tag.

Give them the right fuel.

It is important that your growing son or daughter is getting the right amount of vitamins and minerals. And while most of us mums are aware of the need for vitamin C, iron and zinc, did you know that vitamin B5 is important for normal mental performance? Pharmaton Multivitamins have it ALL, and are packed with vitamins C, D, B2 and B5 and zinc – which help in the development of strong bones, normal vision, and normal mental performance, as well as supporting the immune system. The kids love it too!

Communication is key.

Talking to your little ones every day is crucial. It is important to validate their little feelings and to show them that working hard pays off. Listening to their fears no matter how small and understanding that they see the world differently to us adults is vital. I try to ask them about the best part of their day each evening and it encourages them to open up about their day. I usually find that any issues, no matter how small, come to the surface during our bedtime chats.

What about you, mamas? What tips would you have for helping your little one reach their potential?
