Whether you’ve been in a relationship for a year or twenty, date nights can become pretty stale if not non-existent in your schedule.

We’ve been told so many times the importance of spending quality alone time with your partner at least once a week but if we’re all honest the effort of trying to find a sitter for a standard meal out is sometimes more hassle than it’s worth.

But not to fear, here are some realistic date ideas that will totally add a little romance and excitement back into your date nights.

1. Go for a fancy breakfast

Yes, you will have to make the effort to drag yourself from bed a little bit earlier but it will really set you up for a nice day ahead. Whether at home or at a nice café, a romantic breakfast will guarantee a good start to your day and make you excited to get home in the evening for the right reasons.

2. 50/50 dinner

If mornings just aren’t your thing and a dinner date works best for your lifestyle then why not add the element of surprise. Split the date 50/50 with your partner organising the first half or the night and you the second, or visa-versa. The key to this though is not to tell the other half what you’ve planned. Don’t put too much pressure on yourselves, but sometimes it’s nice not to know what the night has in store.

3Go for a musical walking tour

We totally stole this one from the movies but it looks like so much fun and super romantic too. This one takes a little bit of prep but is so worth it. You’ll need to get yourself a headphone splitter, don’t worry, they’re super cheap and pretty easy to find. One person takes control of the music and sets up a playlist that lasts as long as you want the walk to. Find a popular tourist walking route around your city or town that you can follow, grab a quick coffee for your journey and you’re off. No, you won’t be conversing like the advice columns tell you to but you will have such a laugh dancing around on the street and judging/loving the musical choices of your partner.

4. Déjà vu Date

Pick a memorable date you had, either your first, your anniversary or anything that stood out. Then do the exact same thing again. It can, on paper, be totally boring and silly but just you wait until you start walking down memory lane and getting all nostalgic. It will be hilarious and totally romantic.

5. Element of surprise

This isn’t a full plan but it is something that can add a little extra excitement to your current routine. On the night of your date make sure to get ready alone. We mean completely alone. As soon as the transformation from day-to-date starts happening, make sure you and your partner don’t see each other. They won’t know what’s going to come down those stairs when you’re ready but make sure they get a nice surprise when you do. It will have you feeling all excited like it’s your first date all over again. And sometimes it’s good to not have them see you prance around with curlers in your hair, in your support undies and maximum-cleavage-bra for an hour. A little mystery is always attractive.

So there you have it. Nothing extravagant, nothing crazy expensive just a few ideas to add something new to your date nights or to encourage you to start the weekly event.
