When the summer holidays roll around, our children become accustomed to lie-ins, late breakfasts and mornings spent in pyjamas, so it can be difficult to get them back on track at the dawn of the new school year.

While September heralds new beginnings and exciting prospects, it can also warrant undue stress as us hassled mums attempt to get our children back into a regular routine.

But the start of the new school year doesn't have to be stressful if we implement a few simple rules and a handy reward system.

If you want stress-free school mornings, then why not check out our top five tips!

1. School clothes

Searching for a school tie while trying to make a packed lunch is the perfect way to get yourself off to a stressful start.

Implement a rule which states all school clothes and uniforms must be laid out the night before and checked before bed-time.

Reward your child with a sticker each time this goes off without a hitch.

2. School lunches

Like school clothes, a little preparation goes a long way.

Make school lunches part of your child's homework plan.

In addition to completing their assignments, they must empty their lunchbox and depending on their age, help you to prepare the following day's snacks.

3. Zero-tolerance homework policy

All homework must be completed the day before

If you allow your children to do their homework over their breakfast cereal, you will guarantee yourself heated arguments and delayed departures - it's just never worth it!

4. Set the breakfast table

Everything is that little bit more difficult in the morning, so why not give yourself a head's start?

Set the breakfast table before bed and reap the benefits the following morning - you may be surprised how much it helps!

5. Implement a rewards system

It's important you reward your child for their efforts especially if you want the system to stay in place throughout the year!

Make a checklist and be sure to put it in easy reach of yourself and your gang.

Every week make a note of their efforts, reward them with a small treat and be sure to pinpoint areas which require improvement.

Your school mornings will be running like clockwork before you know it!
