Like most things, renting has its positives and negatives, with the fact that you can’t do it up being one of the most common negatives.

However, while you may need to seek permission to paint the walls or buy new carpets, you could probably get away with the following changes.

1. Bring in good colourful rug

A rug or mat can add texture and vibrancy to a room as well as warmth and comfort. You can invest as much or as little as you can afford, and you can always take it with you when you leave.

2. Pick up some indoor plants

Indoor plants and flowers are a great way to add some colour and fragrance to your room; Aloe vera, the Jade plant, and the Areca palm are easy enough to care for and look gorgeous.

3. Treat yourself to a dramatic piece of furniture

Whether it’s a chair, a side table or even a cabinet, purchasing a dramatic piece of furniture can really turn your rental home into something that looks more homely.

4. Invest in your own curtains

Curtains play a huge role in how your room looks, so choose wisely. While it shouldn’t really matter if you are taking the landlord’s curtains down if you are storing them somewhere proper, you may want to ask their permission depending on your landlord...

5. Stick up some family (or arty) photos

If there are already a number of picture hooks hanging up on the wall why not pop a few family or arty photos up to really make the room your own. They are also a great way to not only give the room a more homely feel, they also work well at adding colour and texture. If there are no hooks, you can opt for picture hanging strips.

6. Chalkboard on the wall

Throw a chalkboard up on the wall and get the kids to draw pictures on it daily - a great way to keep them amused and to add colour and art to boring, beige walls.
