A handy guide to weaning your little one

The transition from breast milk or formula milk to solids is an essential step in your baby's development, and to ensure you both manage it with ease, here’s a selection of helpful tips to ensure this journey is a smooth and enjoyable one.

It is recommended that you start introducing solids around six months of age. By this time, your baby's digestive system is typically ready for a more varied diet, and they may start showing signs of readiness, such as sitting up with support and showing an interest in your food.

When you start weaning, it's essential to select appropriate first foods for your baby. Begin with single-ingredient, iron-rich foods like rice cereal, pureed fruits (such as apples or pears), or vegetables (like sweet potatoes or carrots). These foods are easily digestible and less likely to cause allergies.

In the early stages of weaning, keep the food's texture smooth and runny. As your baby becomes more comfortable with solids, you can gradually thicken the consistency to mashed or finely chopped.

Ensure your baby is securely seated in a highchair or an infant seat during mealtimes. Always supervise your baby while they eat, as choking can be a concern. Cut or mash foods into small, manageable pieces.

Even as you introduce solids, continue breastfeeding or formula feeding. Solid foods are meant to complement, not replace, your baby's primary source of nutrition, at this time.

Introduce new foods one at a time and wait a few days between each new food to monitor for any allergic reactions. If you’re unsure about any particular food group, you can consult your GP or pharmacist who can guide you.

Weaning is a gradual process, and every baby is different. Some may take to solids eagerly, while others may need more time to adjust. Be patient and follow your baby's cues. If they seem disinterested or refuse a certain food, don't force it. It's okay to try again later.

Make sure you have cutlery and bowls specifically for weaning. Dunnes Stores have a super range of Munchkin weaning accessories that are currently on offer.

At around 8-10 months, your baby will likely develop the motor skills to pick up small pieces of food with their fingers, and eventually will start using the cutlery and bowls too. This is an exciting phase of weaning, as it encourages independence and self-feeding.

Weaning is not just about nutrition; it's also an opportunity for your baby to explore different tastes and textures. Make mealtimes enjoyable by sitting together as a family and offering a variety of nutritious foods.

Weaning is a journey that you and your baby embark on together. It's a time of exploration, growth, and building a foundation for healthy eating habits.
