Becoming a mum means our own needs often slip down the priority list, but we must remind ourselves that taking the time to care for our own well-being while nurturing a new hobby is just as important as caring for everyone else’s!
If you want to get fit in 2015 without shelling out for expensive gym memberships or encroaching on quality family-time, then why not take up running? Going for a brief twenty or thirty minute run a day won’t disrupt your day-to-day life, but will have an enormous effect on your lifestyle.
Nervous about starting? Here’s how!
1. Firstly, you will need the right gear.
Use the sales to pick up some good running shoes, a sports bra and a dri-fit running top.
2. Choose a safe route that suits your goals.
Don’t hare off into the middle of a woods which leaves you frightened, deflated and vowing never to look at your trainers again.
3. Begin with the walk-run method.
Walk for four minutes and run for one minute, then gradually increase your running time so that you’re running more than you’re walking!
4. Move your body in a way that feels natural and focus on your breathing.
While running may feel completely alien to you, it’s important to relax your upper body because being rigid only slows you down and try to land softly so you don’t damage your joints!
5. Promise to stick with it.
Choose your running slots and don’t flake on them. The longer you stick with it, the sooner your walk- run method will be a thing of the past and you’ll be officially known as a ‘a mum who runs.'
There is no doubt it will be difficult at first, but you will improve the more you practise.
Remember, running is a fantastic way to keep fit, stay healthy and it’s the perfect opportunity to focus on you, and you alone!
