While these two actors will always be remembered for their captivating performance in 2005 box office hit, Brokeback Mountain, their bond went far beyond a professional or on-screen relationship.

Recalling time spent with late dad-of-one, Heath Ledger, while watching a clip of the film, Jake Gyllenhaal paid tribute to his friend, saying: "It brings me back to thinking about doing that scene with Heath and the honour it was to work with him, and the beauty of his work."

28-year-old Heath, who died from an accidental overdose of prescription drugs in 2008, had established himself as Hollywood royalty following a breathtaking portrayal of the joker in The Dark Knight just months prior to his death.

The star, who shared a daughter with former Dawson's Creek star, Michelle Williams, left an unmistakable void in the Hollywood community following his untimely death over seven years ago.

Commenting on his absence, Jake said: "I miss him as a human being, and I miss working with him. And what an unfortunate thing it is that we won't be able to see the beauty of his expression."

Having cut his teeth on teen soap Home and Away, the Australian-native soon gained a name for himself in the industry following a number of stunning performances, but Jake insists his friend's talents stretched far beyond his public or professional persona, explaining: "He was incredibly special, and that doesn't even come close to encapsulating who he is - who he was."

Attempting to honour his friend through his subsequent life and career choices, the Southpaw star said: "I think losing Heath  makes you see that [life is precious] makes you appreciate that and hopefully moves you away from the things that really don't matter to the things that do."

Heath's daughter Matilda was just two-years-old at the time of her father's death.
