For most of us, the birth of our babies is a smooth sailing experience, but this is, sadly, not the case for every new mum, particularly if their baby is born premature.

One actress who knows about this all too well is Zoe Saldana, who had a anxious time following the premature birth of her twins.

Cy and Bowie were born early last November, and were immediately placed in a neonatal unit at an LA hospital. Talking about the emotional time both she and her husband, Marco, went through, the Avatar actress said: "My husband and I were at the mercy of our nurses and doctors. Our children's lives depended on their every move."

"When children are born prematurely, they don't just need to be held. They need assistance breathing, feeding and going to the bathroom. They also need incubators to protect them while they're forming immune systems," she told People magazine.

Hard to leave even for a little bit, but Mamá has to go to work :-) #twins #workingmoms #momlife #babylove

The Guardians of the Galaxy star now supports Brave Beginnings, an organisation working to ensure hospitals have the resources to treat premature babies.

Referencing the importance of the equipment that saved her sons’ lives, the mum-of-two said: "This equipment can mean the difference between life and death for a child, that's just the truth. If a child can't breathe and doesn't have the equipment to help him breathe we can't help him with our own hands."
