Having a baby is one of the most joyous occasions a woman can go through, but, sadly, dealing with society’s version of how you should look after birth can put us mums under unnecessary stress.

Celebrities in particular are often at the receiving end of criticism whether they lose baby weight too quickly or not quick enough, something that Kerry Washington knows too well.

The Scandal star, who gave birth to her first child, Isabelle, last year, describes her body as “the site of a miracle” – a description all mums should use to describe their own body.

“I’ve been really focused on not being ‘back’ to anything, but being the best version of myself right now. My body is the site of a miracle now. I don’t want to be pre-miracle,” she told SELF magazine.

In fact, when her manager told her she was “back”, the 38-year-old said: “She meant it as a total compliment, but we had this great conversation where I was like, ‘You know what? I try really hard not to use that language, because it’s not about going backward in life.'”

While she is not looking to return to her pre-baby shape the mum-of-one likes to work out, explaining that she feels worse if she doesn’t.

“I try to get it in so I can be back with my kid early,” Washington says about her exercise routine. “I have to take care of myself in order to live life the way I want to. It’s important to have rest days. But in the long run, if I don’t work out for, like, three days, I feel worse, not better,” she said.

What a wonderful way of thinking, we love Kerry’s real attitude.
