Ah, the annual trip to the Gaeltacht – it’s as much a rite of passage for the Irish teen as the first disco and being allowed to head into town with your friends for the very first time.

While most people come back from the summer session full of the joys of céilí and the Irish language, some teens aren’t so enamoured with the process.

One such teen was Don Roche, whose angry postcard home from the Gaeltacht has been doing the rounds and entertaining parents no end this week.

The postcard, written by Don all the way back in 2001, was shared on Ryan Tubridy’s RTÉ radio show by his mother this week. It reads:

Hi Mother Dearest,

This place is crap. It’s so boring. We have to go to class then go home and sit in our room, quiet. There’s no TV or music. The céilí are a load of rubbish, a complete waste of time. Danced with a girl who looked like Satan.

Your angry son who you threw away to a bog.”

Don, who is now 29 years of age, didn’t continue on with the Gaeilge in his career it seems, and is working as a web developer in Malta!

How accurately does Don’s postcard sum up your child’s Gaeltacht experience?
