We have been following the progress of little Ayla Collins, the daughter of the late Jerry Collins and Alanna Madill closely, and her family have shared a rather sad update this evening.

Weeks after it was revealed that the four-month-old was awake and performing basic functions, she has been released into the care of her grandparents, the Madill family, in Canada.

In the latest statement however, family spokesman Tim Castle said: “Current medical opinion is that, sadly, little Ayla will likely suffer ongoing disabilities, the full extent of which cannot yet be known.”

“Ayla will need intense ongoing care,” he added.

The child, who was involved in a car crash in the south of France with her parents back in May, was discharged from Montpellier hospital on July 6.

The Collins family are expected to fly to Canada to visit Ayla shortly.

Paying tribute to Ayla and her parents, Castle added: “As might be expected, little Ayla continues to demonstrate her fighting qualities and strengths – reminiscent of both her mother and her father.”

He also said that the Collins and Madill families are “deeply grateful” for the messages and prayers sent out for Ayla’s recovery.
