Her story has touched the hearts of people all over the world, and the response from the public has been overwhelming, according to the family of little Ayla Collins; the baby daughter of the late rugby star Jerry and his wife, Alana.

This weekend, Ayla’s grandfather, Frank Collins released a statement of gratitude to everyone who contributed to a $55,000 fund set up in her name.

Thanking the team and contributors behind The Jerry Collins Memorial Fund, Frank said: “Thank you from the bottom of our hearts. [$55,000] is a great number.”

The fund was launched by Auckland-based entrepreneur Derek Handley’s Aera Foundation, on the day after the tragic car crash that killed Jerry and Alana, and left little Ayla seriously injured.

Ayla is now living with Alana’s family in Canada, where she is reportedly making great progress.

“Her parents are not here, but the support and love we have got for their little girl has been great. What happened broke our hearts but the support people have given us has helped us through. We are grateful so many people have done something to help this little girl,” Frank added.

As for the impact of Ayla's injuries on her future, Frank said that doctors will have a better idea when the tot starts to walk.

Ayla and the family remain in our thoughts.
