The LÉ Niamh is known to have rescued hundreds of people, many in emergency situations and conditions, but its crew were certainly not expecting the events of yesterday afternoon.

A baby girl has been born aboard the Irish naval vessel, which is currently involved in a humanitarian rescue operation in the Mediterranean.

According to reports this morning, the child’s mother went into labour yesterday afternoon – four weeks early – while on board the LÉ Niamh. Her daughter, who has been named Destiny, was safely delivered by medics Paul O’Connell and Conor Kilbride.

The woman and her child were later taken to Sicily by an Italian Coast Guard for post-natal care. Sources have this morning confirmed that both mother and baby are doing well after their ordeal.

The as yet unnamed woman was one of 114 people transferred from another humanitarian vessel for port. There were a reported 13 other pregnant women among the group aboard the LÉ Niamh being transported to Palermo.

Thank goodness the mother and her child are doing well, and well done to all involved in delivering this little baby.
